Profile

João Marques-Gomes is the CEO of Nova Healthcare Initiative, a researcher at Nova SBE, and a management consultant. He also acts as a manager of SHARE – the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe, which is the largest social study in Europe. João Marques-Gomes is a member of the Executive Committee of the Portuguese Health Economics Association.

João Marques-Gomes specializes in performance improvement. His work consists essentially of measuring the performance of organizations through scientific methods, and understanding how organizations can be more efficient and productive. He works with hospitals, primary care units, and marketing and sales departments of pharmaceutical companies.

His research has been repeatedly funded by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, the Portuguese public agency that supports science, technology and innovation. João Marques-Gomes has worked for the European Commission and for the Portuguese Ministry of Health. He also worked as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company and Pfizer in Brazil.

He is regularly invited as a guest speaker in conferences and congresses organized by professional and scientific associations, universities, government agencies, and healthcare provider units in Europe and Brazil. In Brazil, the conferences organized by the University of Sao Paulo and by SEBRAE – the Brazilian support service for micro and small businesses clearly stand out.

João Marques-Gomes completed his BS and MS in Economics at Nova SBE in Portugal. He has a postgraduate degree in Strategy from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in the USA, and a MBA from FIA – Fundação Instituto de Administração in Brazil. He is currently writing his PhD thesis.
