João Marques-Gomes is the CEO of Nova Healthcare Initiative, the Director of Nova Institute for Value Improvement in Health and Care, a Research Fellow at Nova SBE, and a management consultant.
He specializes in Value-Based Health Care and performance improvement.
He has worked for/with ICHOM – International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement.
João Marques-Gomes was the coordinator and a co-author of the book “Eliminating Hepatitis C in Portugal: From Vision to Action”. The book was published by INCM – Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda. The book features prefaces by former President of Portugal Jorge Sampaio as well as former Minister of the Presidency of the Government of Portugal Nuno Morais Sarmento. The book launch conference received the High Sponsorship of the President of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. The Government of Portugal has committed itself internationally to eliminate hepatitis C in Portugal, as a problem of public health, before 2030. This book shows how this can be done. It is an action plan.
As a management consultant, João Marques-Gomes worked for the European Commission, Portugal’s Ministry of Health, companies among the world’s top 10 largest pharmaceutical companies based on revenue, and hospitals, in Portugal and abroad.
He taught at Nova SBE, the Catholic University of Portugal, and ISCSEM – Instituto Superior de Ciências da Saúde Egas Moniz.
He is a Member of Health Parliament Portugal, where he also serves as the President of the Committee “The patient at the center of decision making”. He is a Member of the Executive Committee of the Portuguese Health Economics Association.
He is regularly invited as a guest speaker in conferences and congresses organized by professional and scientific organizations, universities, government agencies, and health care providers, in Europe and Brazil.
João Marques-Gomes holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Évora and the University of Beira Interior (Portugal), an MBA from FIA – Fundação Instituto de Administração (Brazil), and a MS and a BS in Economics from Nova SBE (Portugal). Additionally, João Marques-Gomes holds a Certificate in Implementing Strategy from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania (USA), and a Certificate for Rethink Health Care Value from Dell Medical School, The University of Texas at Austin (USA).
Throughout his studies, João Marques-Gomes also studied at Cambridge Judge Business School, University College London (UK), EMLYON Business School, Toulouse School of Economics (France), Oulu Business School (Finland), and Nova Information Management School (Portugal).
